Since Portuguese is part of the roman languages, those who speak Spanish or French have less problems to communicate (a small phrase-book, hands and feet can help). English and also German are frequently spoken in the tourist areas.
However it could always be nice, if one masters some of the most important words also in the national language. The try in Portuguese will be rewarded by the Portuguese!
