The original moorish name of the village is Al-Qântara. Alcantarilha is home to a XVIth century church Matriz which contains elements of later eras. Of particular note, the walls of the side chapel, the Capela dos Ossos, are covered with bones. Notice as well the church da Misericordia (XVIIIth century) and the ruins of the Castelo.
