	Belém, the place from where the ships of Portugal once set out for their expeditions, is situated on the Tagus River. Monuments like the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém were constructed from the riches of the new discovered countries.


	The monument Padráo dos Descobrimentos was built in 1960, in memory of the 500th anniversary of death of Infante Dom Henrique and shall remind the persons involved in the expeditions.On the edifice in form of a caravel, Henry the Navigator leads the circle of the exquisite discoverers, followed by Afonso V, Vasco da Gama, Brazil's discoverer Pedro Álvares Cabral and other participants.


	From the platform you can have an indescribably beautiful view of Belém, the Tagus and the famous compass.


	The Torre de Belém was built in the middle of the Tagus between 1515 and 1521. It is an impressive construction because of its Manueline art. Pay particularly attention to the statue of "Our Lady of Safe Homecoming”, which can be seen from the inner courtyard facing the sea.


	The monastery Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a real masterpiece of the Manueline style.
