 The Dominican Monastery Santa Maria da Vitória in Batalha, is declared by UNESCO as world culture heir and therefore a must for every Portugal visitor. One of the most beautiful Gothic construction in Portugal arose, due to a vow like other big constructions too.
On August 14th. 1385, King Joào I. opposed with his fundamentally smaller army against the army of Castile. In case of a victory he praised for the construction of a monastery. With the unexpected victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, Portugal reached its independence from Spain.
